Q: What is Strategic HR and do I need it?
A: SHRM emphasises the need for HR plans & strategies to be formulated and considered as a key part of any company’s overall objectives & strategies which may include improving productivity, developing and embedding a culture that reflects the company values as well as planning how to best Attract, Manage and Retain key staff, as well as integrating a newly acquired company in as smoothly and effectively as possible. SHRM also highlights the need for the companies HR policies and strategies to be responsive to the external or macro environment and it’s changing nature; such as the increasing shortage of good talent and where to find it, or the quickly evolving role of social media and it’s impact on employer branding. SHRM takes into consideration the short, medium & long term trends & plans around all people related issues, and is an integral aspect of business for all companies who have a long term future in mind to consider and plan for, so all functions are working toward the long term sustainability of the company Despite what you may think, Strategic HR Management (SHRM) is not just for big companies, but in general, companies who have > 10 staff, or are considering taking on more staff can benefit from some SHRM guidelines or foundation to work from.
